INVOLVEMENT IN THE COMMUNITY LIFE

Vocational training

The Church has a vocational centre, the Cathedral Commercial School where the community gets trained, capacitated and upskilled in commercial courses such as typing, computer studies. The pottery in Thamaga was started by the Church and later in the 80s was given to the community trust aimed at to empower women in the village.

Education Sector

For many years the civil servant secretaries were trained by the Church at the Cathedral Commercial School. The Church has built nine primary schools namely; St Martin at Papatlo, St Theresa at Lobatse, St. Conrad’s at Ramtswa, St. Bernad’s at Taung, St. Joseph’s at Kgale and Mt. Carmel at Morwa Village, St Patrick at Mahalapye and Our Lady of the Desert at Francistown.

Health Sector

The Church also has two clinics: St. Joseph’s Clinic in Kgale and St. Conrad’s Clinic at Ramotswa. Both clinics are frequented by many people daily. There are more preferred by many because of the way they attend patients.

In 2011 the Church opened Pabalelong Hospice at Metsimotlhabe, a centre for terminally ill patients where palliative care is offered. Since 1990 the Church has been running home-based care for the sick, elderly and the poor in some villages like Mogoditshane, Metsimotlhabe, Kopong, Tsolamosese, Gakutlo and many others. This assistance is continuing at present. The Hospice cares for terminally ill people especially the abandoned without any payment/free. The church spends millions of Pula on this institution for the good of our people.

Hospitality and Ongoing Formation Centre

As part of the Church’s mission to continue developing not only the social person but also the spiritual person, the church officially opened Ave Maria Pastoral Centre on 1st March 2014. The Centre offers the following services: seminars, counselling services, family desk and ongoing formation courses for human development. This centre is a huge investment for the common good, to serve our nation.

Kgalagadi Dessert Children

Since 1975 the church has been taking care of the children of Basarwa in Kgalagadi feeing, clothing and giving education in six pre-schools to train the children to love school and some go as far as Universities from these crèches. We are grateful government saw our work and started building primary schools in these settlements since 2010 at least up to standard 4 Primary Schools. The government started building few primary schools providing standard 1 to standard 4 classrooms in these settlements.

This commitment of providing education, food and clothing takes place every month without failure, a truck leaving Bishop’s office in Gaborone every month to assist these children in six settlements in the desert.

Social Responsibilities

The Roman Catholic Church spends around thirty million Pula yearly on social projects development and common good to uplift our people in Botswana irrespective of their religions. As long as you are a human person, you benefit as this is the church’s mission. To preach the word of God in word and deed.

On construction alone yearly we spend an average of 20 million Pila, developing the country and providing jobs, we pay some millions of Pula as tax to Burs.

Formation

We inform and form the youth to become responsible and productive citizens through youth programmes. We impart and inculcate the Christian principles and value to all for the good of our nation.
