Jubilee Year of Hope: Pilgrims of Hope Launch
18/01/2025 -The Catholic Diocese of Gaborone gathered in unity and prayer this past Saturday at Christ the King Cathedral to launch the Jubilee Year of Hope, themed “Pilgrims of Hope.” Presided over by His Grace Frank Nubuasah, SVD, the event marked the beginning of a transformative year dedicated to spiritual renewal.
In his sermon, Bishop Nubuasah reflected on the profound need for hope in today’s world. He spoke about the challenges of recent years, including the COVID-19 pandemic, which tested humanity’s resilience, and the growing societal issues in Botswana, such as gender-based violence.
The bishop highlighted a shocking statistic: 60 cases of rape were recorded during the Christmas holidays. Addressing Catholic men, he called for accountability and transformation, stating:
“Catholic men should be ashamed of the violence instigated against women and children. On behalf of men, I am sorry.”
He proposed creating forums for men to discuss these issues, recognizing that some Catholic men have been implicated in acts of violence. His Grace emphasized the Church’s role in fostering dialogue, repentance, and justice.
The Jubilee Candle: A Light of Hope
A significant moment of the launch was the blessing of Jubilee candles, which were later distributed to parishes across the diocese. These candles, the bishop explained, represent the light of Hope and Christ’s presence, urging Catholics to extend this light to their communities.
“This light is not just for our altars,” he said, “but for every corner of our society. Let it guide us in building a community of hope and compassion.”
